Below is a list of the most popular questions we get asked here at I Am Locs Inc. If your loc question is not answered below, please send us an email at admin@iamlocs.com and we will gladly answer your question.

What Are Locs?

A loc is a group of hair follicles that have matted together to form a solid rope-like structure. Inside this structure, the hair is strengthened and protected against the elements from free radical damage.

How Many Locs Make Up A Set?

Everyone’s hair density and texture are different and, therefore this number will vary from person to person but on average a set of locs are between 75-85 locs.

What Is A Faux Loc?

A faux loc is a loc that has been created from synthetic hair strands. The stylist attaches the synthetic hair to the client’s natural hair and uses a wrapping method to give the “faux” loc a true loc form.

Why Are My Locs Dull?

There could be a few reasons why your locs are dull. Dull locs normally indicate a lack of moisture. You must check your water intake and/or increase your water intake. Stress and a lack of rest could increase the dull appearance. Chemical processing options such as permanent color or hair bleach may cause your hair to appear dull as well. Lastly, take notice of your diet. A mineral deficiency or an excessive amount of toxins in your body can affect the appearance of your locs. Caring for your hair starts with what you put on the inside of your body.

What Is The Difference Between A Dreadlock And A Loc?

“Dreadlock” is a term that has been used interchangeably with the word “Loc ” in the American culture for many years. The main difference is that dreadlocks are not manicured while locs are considered manicured (retwisted at the root).

Dreadlocks have been traced back many years as a practice of people to create a connection to the Creator by forming a hairlike antenna. It is said that beginning this process starts an agreement between the wearer and the deity and is said to be quite spiritual. During this process, they were to abandon all vanities, and yes that included the maintenance of their hair. When left alone the dreadlock would begin to form and this method of obtaining locs is referred to as “freeform dreadlocks”. There are some dreadlock wearers that will not allow others to look at their hair, as they believe that covering their hair protects their blessings of sight and wisdom.

Locs are manicured. While it is a very similar process that “dreadlocks” endure, Locs are normally smaller and require maintenance as often as every 4 weeks. Regardless of what you call your hair, the decision is YOURS and does not need to be validated by anyone.

Can I Get Locs If My Hair Is Thinning?

You are able to grow locs even if your hair is thinning. One does not determine the other. Hair that is thinning may stem from a vitamin deficiency caused by poor diet or use of certain medications. Loc wearers start locs for many reasons, and a common reason is to thicken and grow their hair longer. Thinning hair may require more time between maintenance to reduce the amount of pulling on the scalp. Do not apply a lot of stress to the hair if you have thinning hair. Massage your scalp as this stimulates growth. Talk to your Loctician or reach out to admin@iamlocs.com to help determine the cause of your thinning and schedule for a consultation to see if locs are a good choice for you!

How Long Does It Take For Locs To Form?

On average, it will take 4-6 months for your locs to begin to bud or lock together. There are different factors that will increase or reduce the amount of time it takes for your hair to lock such as the texture and density of your hair or how often you receive maintenance. Check out “The Locking Process” on our site to learn the in depth process of how loose hair turns into Loc’d hair.
